Weekend Summary.

Saturday:

After our Castling adventure on Friday, we had run out of things on the immediate list, and I was on my last pair of clean socks.  So, on Saturday, we slept in a bit, thought briefly about renting a car in a nearby town, realized we couldn't get to the nearby town before the car rental place closed, punted, and bought tickets back to Holzkirchen.

Normally the transit out of Füssen (where all the tourists were headed) and to Holzkirchen (which is literally at the end of the line) wouldn't be anything to write home about.  "So", you ask, "why then are you, in fact, writing home about it?"

Well, it has to do with train routing and Soccer.  To get to Holzkirchen by train from basically anywhere, one must go through Munich.  The Champions league final (basically the most important soccer match outside of the World Cup or European Cup), involved Chelsea and, as luck would have it Bayern München.  A significant side-note:  The game was being played in Munich.

That led to this:

Which in-turn led to this:

All the way to Munich. It was hilarious. They'd sort of settle down between stops (mainly to drink more beer), but every time we came up to a stop, they'd start up again to greet the next pack of fans waiting to board.  These kids were not fooling around.  They brought crates of beer, and were already happily tipsy on the train at noon local time.  Fun Fact:  The game didn't kick off until 8:45pm local time.....you can extrapolate from there.  At the Munich change-over, we wished the FCB Fans "Vielen Glück", and got on the very-empty train headed to Holzkirchen.

Upon arrival, we hit our quandary for the day.  The next bus arrived in 2 hours that would take us to Russ's apartment.  We knew it was ~6km to the apartment with a foot path the whole way.  We figured we'd been on a train the whole day, and we'd beat the bus, so we set off on foot.  Normally, for a couple of Eagle Scouts, this wouldn't be a problem.  Unfortunately, I was relying too heavily on street names and a map on my phone that came from the internet.  We were heading in the right direction, but turned one street early (because ze Germans, for all their efficiency, don't really clearly mark major intersections for whatever reason).  We ended up hiking for quite a while in the wrong direction.  Mercifully we realized the snafu as we were coming up to a hiking path that connected the road we were walking on to the road we should have been walking on.

Another hour later, and after 6 total MILES (of what should have been 6km), we arrived back at the apartment.  I find it worth noting that we still beat the bus (booya).

Tragically, FC Bayern München lost to Chelsea in PKs after double-overtime.  Stupid PK shoot-outs.  I think they should just pull the goalies and keep playing.

Sunday:

Lazy Sunday.  I'll have to say, waking up to this view may never get old.

We slept in a bit today and then walked into town between 11:30 and 1 (via the correct route, so we were only hiking for 90 minutes or so, and with less to carry), and amidst looking for a store that might be open and contain a few necessities, we got more familiar with central Holzkirchen.  As it happens, there is a Frühlingsfest (spring festiival) going on down-town.  It's kinda like the TN Valley fair, only scaled down to a down the size of maybe Lenoir City, so it takes up all of one town square.

We managed to get Russ a longer-term bus pass so he doesn't have to fish for change every morning, and then used the same bus to get back to the Apartment.

POTD "lost in translation":

Maybe they sell Snuggies?
